There's a very interesting piece on the ONS website recently released, showing that in 2012, nearly half of all live births were to mothers aged 30 or over and that the average age at which mothers gave birth was 29.8 years. This is strikingly different to a generation ago (in 1973 the average age was 26), but similar at one level to two generations ago (in 1942 the average age was 29). However, the 1942 figure was for a time when family size was greater and as a result a woman's years of childbearing were more elongated. What's significant about the current average is that the average age for first births is 28.
